Actress Alexis Bledel, who plays Katherine Heigl’s partner in the new movie Jenny’s Wedding, said the timing of the film, which debuted July 31, couldn’t have been better.
“People are so excited just to see a film being made on this subject matter,” Bledel said.
The movie deals with LGBT rights, cultural acceptance and the support of a partner.
“[And to see] conversations that are authentic…something that they recognize and could relate to.”
In the movie, Jenny (Heigl) lives an openly gay life except around her family. When she decides to marry her partner Kitty (Bledel), they react with shock, fear and anger. Film writer and director Mary Agnes Donoghue based the movie off her niece.
“It was a story that was close to Mary Agnes’ heart,” Bledel said. “It was personal for her.”
Both Bledel and Heigl got to meet the real Jenny and her partner.
“You always feel a little bit of pressure when it’s based on a real person, to stay true to their vision,” she said. “I just wanted it to be authentic for Mary Agnes.”
The film was shot in just 20 days, but Bledel feels they expressed Jenny and Kitty’s love and commitment toward each other in the movie.
“It’s really about family,” she said. “They want to be able to start a life together.”
Jenny’s Wedding is available in select theaters.
