Griner, who was playing with the Beijing Great Wall of the WCBA, was walking from practice with two of her teammates when a man with a knife appeared and started swinging it around.
He chased Griner and the two women onto their bus and stabbed Griner, slightly catching her elbow. According to her agent Lindsay Kagawa, Griner and the two teammates he stabbed were all wearing winter coats.
The man stayed on the bus trapping the women for about five minutes before he left.
“First let me say I’m ok!!!!” Griner said on her Instagram. “But last night me and 3 my teammates got chase and attack by a man with a big ass knife got a little scratch and my teammates walk away unharmed! He chase us into our bus and had us corned yelling at us then he finally left! Ugh lets just say I’m ready to get out this city we are visiting! Life can be took at any moment! Cherish every moment! AGAIN IM OK! Thank you to everyone that has been checking on me!”
Apparently the man returned later covered in blood and was left to Chinese authorities.
“I was thinking I was going to end up stabbed in China and if he got to us at the back of the bus, I was going to have to fight this man with a knife,” Griner said. “The guy was clearly either mentally ill or very drunk. He was yelling about us hitting his wife and it was pretty clear he had no idea who we were.”
The next day, Griner said there were three or four cops at every entrance.
“We are thankful Brittney and her teammates are all okay after this incident,” the Phoenix Mercury team tweeted.
