Fresh from their 2014 Burlesque Hall of Fame win for Best Small Group, Lily Verlaine, Jasper McCann, and their incomparable “corps du burlesque” return to Seattle’s illustrious Triple Door for their ninth annual installment of Land of the Sweets: The Burlesque Nutcracker, December 11-27, 2014, for 33 magical performances. A spectacle of ecdysiast pageantry, Land Of The Sweets has delighted holiday revelers since 2006 by giving the Nutcracker ballet a bawdy makeover.
Verlaine & McCann Presents has become a name synonymous with high-quality burlesque-dance performance in Seattle. Known for drawing high-level dance talent from Spectrum Dance Theatre, Whim W’Him, and Ballet Bellevue, as well as bringing award-winning burlesque stars to the Triple Door stage, audiences know they can expect a top-tier evening from these producers.
“Our original intent in creating this show was to give people a grown-up entertainment experience during the holidays, because so much of the energy of the season is focused on children,” co-producer McCann commented.
Verlaine added, “The source material for The Nutcracker is familiar to audiences and full of sumptuous variety-far off lands, beautiful people, delicious food references-perfect for a burlesque show. Add to that Duke Ellington’s arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s score and, well, the show was just there, begging to be written.”
In Land of the Sweets, superstars of Seattle’s Burlesque A-List, including Verlaine herself, Waxie Moon, Babette La Fave, Tory Tiara, and McCann become the denizens of the exclusive after-hours party where Nutcracker characters unwind. The principal dancers are joined by a Corps du Burlesque featuring Mimi Me, Holly Pop, Laurel Bordeaux, Paris Original, and Poppy Daze. This powerhouse ensemble reveals the offstage lives of the staid characters of The Nutcracker as they shed their inhibitions…and their costumes!
The ninth annual installment of this already luscious spectacle comes complete with reinvigorated costume design in collaboration with Teatro ZinZanni costume designer Louise DiLenge, the award-winning “Countess of Coffee” scene as it was performed at the 2014 Burlesque Hall of Fame, Moon’s nefarious Rat King, the icy Snow Queen and more!
