Former President Bill Clinton was in New York Tuesday, April 23, 2013 to introduce the World Premiere of Bridegroom – a film depicting “an intensely personal edge to the ongoing debate over the legal rights of same-sex couples,” according to the film’s summary.
Clinton’s appearance at the SVA Theater in support of the timely new film follows his public denouncement of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) at the GLAAD Media Awards and in other public platforms.
In his remarks at the premiere of Bridegroom, Clinton said, “This is really, on one level, a wonderful, sad, heartbreaking yet exhilarating and life affirming story and on another level it’s a story about our nation’s struggle to make one more step in forming a more perfect union, for which marriage is both the symbol and substance. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.”
Bridegroom utilizes interviews, photos and video footage to illustrate the uncommon connection that drew the main characters – Shane and Tom – together. For six years the couple remained united despite extreme challenges from both family and society, until a tragic accident tore apart their dreams and left one of them in the fight of their lives to be recognized as his soulmate’s legitimate counterpart.
Other guests at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival screening included: Brad and George Takei (Star Trek), Thomas Roberts (MSNBC), Jason Somerville (professional poker player), Zoe Bell (Raze, Oblivion), Keenyah Hill (New Girl), Monique Coleman (High School Musical), Maxwell Zagorski (Old 37), Eric West(Cosmo‘s Hot Actor of 2013), Candice Carruth (model), Sasha Andreev (HGTV host), Jason Goldberg (CEO of Fab.com), Hank Chen (actor/host/YouTube personality), Jordan Bach (Advocate magazine’s 40 Under 40 2013), Nicholas Ferroni (actor/model, Men’s Fitness magazine’s 25 Fittest Men in the World 2012), Jay Kuo (composer/playwright, Allegiance), Chelsea Cannell (actress/host That Morning Show on E), Rachel Smith (Miss USA 2007, correspondent on GMA), Hank Chen (The Angriest Man in Brooklyn), Phillip Bloch (Celebrity Stylist).
