On behalf of The Seattle Lesbian news organization, and all people in Washington State who understand we are all equal under the law, I want to thank Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie for their gift of $2.5 million to the campaign to Approve the same-sex marriage Referendum in Washington State. It will certainly go a long way to help publicize the Approve Referendum 74 Campaign and bring awareness of the need for marriage equality for all. Same-sex marriage was legalized in the state in February but opponents collected enough signatures to put the law in front of voters this November.
With respect to the fact that money is power in a campaign, remember each of us is also powerful – the power is in our one vote. Regardless of how much money we have in our bank accounts, or how much can be contributed to the campaign, marriage equality will ultimately pass in Washington State on one currency: the currency of conscience.
If you can’t make a monetary donation to the Approve 74 Campaign, consider making a donation of advocacy. Talk to your neighbors, your friends and your family, tell them marriage equality is not about religion or politics – it’s about civil rights and equality under the law. Tell them to vote their conscience and make a decision based on what is fair, right and equal…and not be swayed by PR scare tactics from bully pulpits. Approving Referendum 74 is a matter of conscience, dignity, compassion, and equality.
Indeed, the Bezos’ donation will greatly help the campaign, but I believe the donation has a more important message. Amazon is making a statement to the corporate world: money and politics can and should be working for the betterment of a society. An equal society. One of the proudest moments of my life as an American came when President Obama stated his belief in marriage equality. Our President made a statement of conscience. Thank you Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos for your support of equal rights. You are a terrific example of the currency of conscience.
