Wednesday, Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Edward Stack announced the chain would immediately stop selling assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, and that it would not sell guns to anyone under the age of 21, regardless of local laws.
“We’re taking these guns out of all of our stores permanently,” Stack said, adding that he was prepared for any potential backlash toward the business.
“The systems that are in place across the board just aren’t effective enough to keep us from selling someone a gun like that and so we’ve decided that we’re not gong to sell the assault-type rifles anymore,” Stack told ABC.
“When lawmakers won’t act, it’s up to private citizens and responsible businesses to do the right thing,” said Pride Fund founder and executive director Jason Lindsay. “We applaud Dick’s Sporting Goods for its sensible steps to keep assault weapons off our streets and ensure that guns remain out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them. I served our country in the war zone of Iraq. Let me be crystal clear – weapons similar to those I carried on the streets of Baghdad do not belong on the streets of America. There’s a new awakening in America today on gun violence, and legislators beholden to the NRA will have to answer to voters if they continue to resist the demands of those calling for an end to the violence.”
Nearly every mass shooting in recent memory has been carried out by a military-style assault weapon and large-capacity magazines. These weapons are specifically designed to kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time. They have no practical purpose among the sporting community and they’re ill-equipped as a means of self defense. According to the latest Quinnipiac University poll, 67 percent of Americans support a ban on these types of weapons.
Assault weapons equipped with large-capacity magazines are even more lethal. When these devices are involved, it results in more people shot when compared to incidents where large capacity magazines were not used. Because LCM’s reduce the need for a shooter to reload, they deprive people of opportunities to escape or intervene.
“One such example of a politician beholden to the NRA and their dangerous agenda is Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (VA-10). She is probably hoping no one will notice her appearance on the notorious list – U.S. House members receiving the most cash from the National Rifle Association. Comstock should be worried, because she’s out of step with the voters in her district. Comstock was named one of the most vulnerable Republican incumbents by the prestigious Cook Political Report, which sees her district as a prime pickup opportunity for the Democrats. Exit polls showed that during the 2017 state elections in Virginia, gun reform was the second most important issue for voters, just behind health care. Newly-inaugurated Gov. Ralph Northam made gun reform a major issue in his campaign against Ed Gillespie, who touted his NRA “A” rating in TV ads. Comstock’s history of taking significant amounts of NRA cash might earn her a spot on another list this year — in addition to being number 10 in NRA blood money — this year, she could be on the list of Republican incumbents who are defeated with the help of Pride Fund to End Gun Violence,” said Lindsay.
Pride Fund is the only national LGBTQ political organization focused solely on gun violence prevention. Pride Fund was founded by Jason Lindsay, a gay Iraq War veteran, in the days following the June 2016 mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. When it occurred, the Pulse nightclub shooting was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Pride Fund supports sensible gun policy reforms while championing LGBTQ safety and equality by advocating for legislation and supporting candidates at the state and federal levels.
