Sixteen-year-old Elle Fanning has signed on to star as a teenager transitioning from female to male in the drama Three Generations.
Fanning’s character, Ray, lives with his mother Maggie (Naomi Watts) who is having a hard time coping with Ray’s decision to become a male. Her own mother, Dolly (Susan Sarandon) and her partner Frances are also having a hard time with Ray’s decision.
Recently, films featuring cis-gendered actors playing transgender roles have been criticized. Jared Leto was under the microscope for his role as a transgender woman in Dallas Byers Club, and Andrew Garfield in an Arcade Fire video.
Creator of Transparent, Jill Solloway has committed to hiring a transgender person for the show’s second season, saying “And in the same way where I wouldn’t want a man to say, ‘I can have a writer’s room full of men and we can write women just fine’ – I can’t say that I can create a show about a trans woman and not have a trans woman writing for me.”
It is unclear of whether this will be the same with Three Generations.
Three Generations is set to begin filming in New York this month and will be released next year.
