Lesbian comedienne and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is partnering up to produce the Jody Picoult novel Sing You Home into a feature film.
Deadline.com reported the exclusive and we have a little bit of information to share with you here about the Louisiana native’s movie plans.
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will be partnering with DeGeneres to produce Sing You Home. DeGeneres will be involved solely as producer on this (not star) and she optioned it with her own money and enlisted Zadan and Meron to help make it possible. They will develop it themselves.
As we previously reported, Jodi Picoult’s newest novel, Sing You Home, explores the challenges same-sex couples face in marriage, adoption and, more specifically, the adoption of frozen embryos.
When Zoe and Max Baxter’s marriage dissolves after their last pregnancy attempt ends in stillbirth, Zoe throws herself into her career and Max turns to the bottle. Eventually Max finds his peace in the evangelical church whose pastor has vowed to fight the “homosexual agenda.”
Zoe’s affinity for music results in her becoming a music therapist. She uses her music to soothe burn victims, help Alzheimer’s patients connect with the present and provide solace for hospice patients. When a guidance counselor named Vanessa asks Zoe to work with a suicidal teen, their relationship blossoms and moves quickly from business to love.
As the love between Zoe and Vanessa grows, the ladies decide to marry and start thinking about a family of their own. During the years of infertility when Zoe was attempting to have a baby with Max, they froze some of their embryos. Remembering, Zoe seeks Max’s permission for Vanessa to carry the fertilized embryos. She is shocked instead to find him furious and, backed by his church, suing for custody.
