Famous mom Betty DeGeneres admitted there was one negative thought that entered her mind when her daughter Ellen came out to her.
“[I thought,] ‘Oh darn, her engagement picture won’t be in the New Orleans paper so all my friends can see it,” Betty said at Logo’s second annual Trailblazers Honors ceremony last week.
Betty, who shared the stage with co-presenter Tyler Posey, said “when an LGBT person comes out, a parent’s initial reaction can have a very deep and lasting impact. When Ellen came out to me I just gave her a big hug.”
She may not have made the New Orleans paper, but “I think she more than made up for that,” Betty said, as her daughter’s wedding to Portia de Rossi was on the cover of People Magazine in 2008.
Before the event, which honors pioneers of LGBT visibility and acceptance, Betty said she advises parents of children coming out to attend the “tremendously helpful” PFLAG meetings which help unite the LGBT community to their families, friends and allies.
“I was surprised and upset because I knew she’d be an object of bigotry and discrimination,” she said. “That was not okay with me. Back then nobody talked about being gay, so it was a very different time.”
Logo’s Trailblazers Honors ceremony premiered Saturday June 27.
