During an interview with Sky News, Sir Elton John gushed about how much he likes the Pope.
“The new Pope has been wonderful, he’s excited me so much,” John said. “He’s stripped it [the Church] down to the bare bones and said it’s all basically about love.”
John, who hopes to marry his longtime partner David Furnish within the year, said he believes that not only gay clergy should be granted the right to get married, but that the celibacy vow for Catholic priests should be abolished.
“These are old and stupid things,” he said. “If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen.”
“He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that’s what the church should be about.”
As far as his own wedding, John said that though he is notorious for throwing huge parties, the wedding will be more low-key. He and Furnish had a big civil union party when they took that plunge eight years ago.
“We’ll do it very quietly,” he said in April. “But we will do it and it will be a joyous occasion and we will have our children.”
