Join the Eastern Washington University Pride Center and Eagle Pride, their LGBTQIA student club, as they host Gender Awareness Week 2013, from Monday, November 18 – Friday, November 22, with activities designed to educated and raise awareness about the issues surrounding gender and gender expression.

Here’s what’s coming up east of the mountains.

Monday, November 18:

Romeos Movie Screening with Q&A 

A German film that revolves around the romantic relationship between Lukas, a 20-year-old gay trans man who is transitioning from female to male, and a cisgender gay man.

Tuesday, November 19:

What is Gender? Gender 101

A conversation about gender, what it is and how we express it.

Pride Center (SHOW 105) – 1:00 p.m. -2:00 p.m.

The Codes of Gender Documentary Screening

The Codes of Gender looks at how advertising communicates ideas about gender, what is masculinity and what is femininity.

What Is Intersex?

Jane Goto will briefly discuss the history of the intersex movement, relate her own story, and share insights from a decade on the front lines with an intersex advocacy group.

Wednesday, November 20:

XXY Movie Screening

An Argentine-Spanish-French film that tells the story of Alex, an intersexed 15-year-old.

Pride Center (SHOW 105) – 10 a.m. – Noon

What Is Intersex?

Jane Goto will briefly discuss the history of the intersex movement, relate her own story, and share insights from a decade on the front lines with an intersex advocacy group.

Controversial Conversations – When Gender Neutral Bathrooms?

What are gender neutral bathrooms and why do we need them on the EWU campus?

Thursday, November 21:

Ma Vie En Rose (My Life in Pink) Movie Screening

Ma Vie En Rose is a film from Belgium that tells the story of Ludovic, who is seen by her family and community as a boy, but consistently insists that she is a girl.

Pride Center (SHOW 105) – Noon – 2:00 p.m.

Eagle Pride Meeting: Gender Awareness Workshop

Pride Center (SHOW 105) – 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Transgender Day of Remembrance & Candlelight Vigil

A slide show and candlelight vigil to memorialize those who have been killed as a result of anti-transgender violence and to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community.

Showalter 109 (Candlelight Vigil will be held on the Showalter Lawn) – 5:00 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Friday, November 22:

Tomboy Movie Screening

A French film that follows a 10-year-old girl named Laure who, after moving with her family to a new neighborhood, dresses as a boy and introduces herself to her new friends as Mickäel.

Pride Center (SHOW 105) – Noon – 2:00 p.m.
