Fantasia Barinno has started the new year off on a bad foot already.

A few days ago the American Idol winner sparked controversy when she posted a picture of herself on Instagram striking a dance pose with a caption that read:

“I Rise ABOVE IT ALL!!! THE WORLD IS GONE MAD. KIDS, THE GOVERNMENT THE church House … Everybody Trying!!!!!!! Its a lot that going on that the Bible speaks about we should Not be doing. Weed legal in some places, Gay Marriage Legal BUT YET IM JUDGED!!! I’m not doing Nothing for you … My Life!!!!”

It wasn’t long before her mob of followers began spewing angry comments back about the anti-gay caption.

However Barrino was shocked and appalled people actually thought she was against the gays.

Barrino claimed that bloggers took her caption the wrong way and said, “I, Fantasia Monique Barrino, don’t judge anyone because I don’t want to be judged. The gay community is one of my largest supporters. I support the gay community as they support me. Bloggers please stop misrepresenting the facts.”

Her reps also released a statement.

“Comments made by Ms. Barrino through her Intragram account were recently taken far out of context, and the purpose of this release is to set the record straight. Ms. Barrino is not now, nor has she ever been an opponent of the LGBT community. She has supported and performed at numerous events that are sponsored by the LGBT community. Whether it’s through a live performance or placement on social media, Ms. Barrino uses every opportunity to reach out and connect with her fans, all of her fans.”

Fantasia was interviewed by StarPulse where she again tried to clear up the controversy.

There was some recent controversy over your comments in an Instagram post regarding gay marriage. Since you are known to have wide support in the gay community, can you clear up any misconceptions for us all over the post?

First of all, my words were taken out of context! After being personally attacked on my Instagram account, I was simply trying to respond and say we live in a world where things are becoming more acceptable…thank God! I was using gay marriage as an example of other matters by trying to say that people are becoming more accepting of gay marriage, of weed being legalized in some states etc. all as a comparison to the personal aspects of my life. However, my question really was ‘Why are people still judging me?’ It was not that I was trying to judge anyone. Anybody that knows anything about my history should know how I have been judged and talked about negatively from the first day that I hit the American Idol stage. However, I am not a judgmental person and never will be. I like to see people do what they enjoy and be with the person they enjoy being with. The LGBT community has been, and still are to date, my biggest supporters. Now…how you doin’?!

Do you feel like there was a rush to judgment before understanding what you meant?

100 percent and it’s such a shame that one blogger can take something and twist your words and make a mountain out of a mole hill, just to simply start unnecessary drama.

Take this opportunity then to set the record straight for all of us first hand: What are your thoughts specifically on gay marriage?

I am happy that the people in the LGBT community are now becoming legally respected and allowed to marry who they love. You should be able to spend your life with the person you want to, protect them and be protected as well… legally!

Interestingly, the singer dishes out talk of the Bible and the sanction of marriage, though she had an affair with a married man in 2010.

This incident may have brought attention back to the singer who has been out of the spotlight for a few years now. Fantasia has a new album out January 8.
