The British cult comedy series Ab Fab has been turned into a full-length movie, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, that will be premiering in July.
The movie follows PR agent Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and her best friend Patsy (Joanna Lumley) as they live the glamorous life full of shopping, drinking and clubbing around London. The friends get caught up in a major incident at a fashion launch party and are soon in the midst of a media storm. They find themselves running from the fear of being poor and make a plan to escape and live among the rich in the French Rivera forever.
The British-American comedy will be directed by Mandie Fletcher and written by Jennifer Saunders. The sitcom Ab Fab ran for three seasons after it aired in 1992.
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie has already run into some trouble after Caucasian comedian Tough was announced as playing the role of Huki Muki, a Japanese fashion designer. Korean American comedian Margaret Cho tweeted her disappointment, saying, “I love AbFab but #YELLOWFACE is something I cannot watch – I just can’t. It’s sad when heroes are no longer heroic. Too bad. #racism.”
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie will premiere in the United States on July 22.
