Fourteen-year-old Girl Meets World star Rowan Blanchard came out as queer last week on social media.
After speculation that her character on the show Riley has feelings for another Girl Meets World character, Maya, Blanchard tweeted:
“Would really be here for this! if not Riley- its vvv important to me, being queer, that there is representation on our show,” she wrote.
She also added, in a follow-up tweet, “& being queer to me just means not putting a label on sexuality – just existing.”
Blanchard has written several feminism articles, including one called “Sorry Not Sorry” in Tavi Gevinson’s magazine, The Rookie and has spoken on gender equality at the UN Women conference.
She and Amandla Stenberg, 17-year-old Hunger Games actress who recently came out as bisexual, were both named the Feminist Celebrity of the Year by the Ms. Foundation for Women.
Blanchard is the first Disney Channel star who has come out while their show is still on air.
