After a biphobic joke was made on ABC’s The Real O’Neals, Grey’s Anatomy’s actress Sara Ramirez said she “will invest my brand where I’m respected.”
Ramirez played Callie Torres on Grey’s for 10 years before stepping out for the current season to focus on other projects. Both the character and Ramirez are openly bisexual.
During a recent episode of The Real O’Neals, Noah Galvin’s character Kenny, who is openly gay, compared bisexuality to having “webbed toes,” or “money problems.”
“WORDS MATTER. PLEASE SIGN this petition 2 @ABCNetwork protesting biphobia in @TheRealONeals….” Ramirez tweeted after the episode with a link to a change.org petition started by an LGBTQ teenager to end biphobia in the show.
PFLAG National, which worked with the show on the episode, issued an apology.
“We were so focused on the family acceptance portion of the episode that we completely missed the joke,” director of communications for PFLAG National Liz Owen, said. “We were really proud on partnering on the episode. It blew by as a teen looking for acceptance from his family. In hindsight, we should have caught it and we blew it. We should done bette and we will definitely do better next time. As allies we have a responsibility to own it when we mess up.”
Galvin also tweeted an apology, but it has since been deleted. ABC has not yet addressed the joke.
“& while @PFLAG response was amazing, where is network’s response? The actor’s response wasn’t enough 4 me. @ABCNetwork was in the same room,” she tweeted.
