Olympic American goalkeeper and former Dancing with the Stars contestant Hope Solo took to her Twitter account last night to relay her disappointment in Brandi Chastain’s criticism of U.S. defender Rachel Buehler.
Chastain is currently working for NBC as a color analyst during the London Olympic Games. Solo is on the U.S. national team roster. Both women were on the U.S. national team in 2000 and 2002.
Solo shared with her 497,696 followers Saturday night:
- Its 2 bad we cant have commentators who better represents the team&knows more about the game @brandichastain! #fb
- Lay off commentating about defending and gking until you get more educated @brandichastain the game has changed from a decade ago. #fb
- 3-0 and onto the quarters! Proud of our team for keeping our composure during a chippy game! On to Manchester! #fb
- Its important 2 our fans 2 enjoy the spirit of the olympics. Its not possible when sum1 on air is saying that a player is the worst defender!
- I feel bad 4 our fans that have 2 push mute, especially bc @arlowhite is fantastic.@brandichastain should be helping 2 grow the sport #fb
According to ESPN, Chastain is one of the top all-time defenders for the U.S. team. She played in 192 international games from 1988-2004 and is best known for taking off her jersey to celebrate the decisive penalty kick in the landmark shootout victory over China in the World Cup final at the Rose Bowl in 1999.
The mood later lifted on Solo’s Twitter page when she shared:
Solo made similar news back in 2007 for publicly berating her then-head coach Greg Ryan during the World Cup after she was benched in favor of veteran goalkeeper Brianna Scurry. The team ultimately crumbled to Brazil in the semifinals.
