It was a big week for 19-year-old British Olympic diver Tom Daley. He not only came out as bisexual through a YouTube video, he also revealed that he is in love with 39-year-old screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.
On December 2, Daley made a YouTube video telling his fans that he is bisexual.
“My life changed massively when I met someone, and they make me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great,” he said. “That someone is a guy. It did take me by surprise a little bit.”
At the time, he refused to mention his new boyfriend’s name.
“At the moment, I wouldn’t like anything to change,” he explained. “I hope it doesn’t get ruined by the media attention. Everyone has been so supportive and I hope it continues that way.”
However, during an interview on The Jonathan Ross Show, Daley couldn’t help but gush about his new love.
Daley first saw Black at a party and Daley didn’t even know if he was gay or not. He finally decided to make the first move.
“I typed ‘call me’ in his notes with a smiley face on this phone and the next day, he texted,” he recalled. “He makes me feel safe and happy. Right now I couldn’t be happier.”
Apparently the feelings are reciprocated.
“I’d never felt the feeling of love, it happened so quickly. I was completely overwhelmed by it to the point I can’t get him out of my head all the time,” Daley said. “I’ve never had it before where I love someone and they love me just as much.”
Though there is a 20 year age gap, neither of them seems to mind.
“Tom told friends he doesn’t care what people think,” a source said.
Though he’s so in love now, Daley admitted in his interview that he hadn’t always felt so happy about his sexuality.
“I felt like there was something wrong with me. I didn’t know other people out there felt that way. I felt so alone, so locked away and couldn’t say anything,” he said. “Now that everyone knows, I have nothing to hide. Those chains that I felt wrapped around me are gone, and I can carry on with my life as normal and be happy.”
