As the New Year begins, many people are still finalizing their resolutions. Be definition empowerment is the process of becoming more confident or stronger in your daily life. While everyone’s personal definition of empowerment may vary, it’s all about improving your handle on life and focusing on yourself. Are you wondering how to empower yourself in 2020 and beyond? Using these tools, you can instill empowerment in yourself — and others, too.

Give Yourself Goals

One of the first steps in learning how to be empowered is giving yourself goals. While your overall goal is for greater self-empowerment, you need to recognize ways you can achieve this feeling in your personal life. For example, a way to feel empowerment would be to increase your knowledge of a new computer program at work. This would allow you to exceed in your position and have a newfound confidence. But, you want to make sure your goals are both achievable and defined. This is where SMART goals come in. SMART goals are goals that are Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Realistic, and Time-Related. In this example, your SMART goal would be to spend 30 minutes a day for four weeks completing an online workshop to become an expert in the program.

Use Journaling as an Outlet

Another great way for learning how to feel empowered is to use journaling as an outlet. The great thing about journaling is that it’s completely customizable based on your needs. Consider making a bullet journal to keep track of daily tasks or habits you want to incorporate in the new year. Or use your journal to write down your SMART goals and brainstorm how to achieve them. You can also use a journal as a diary, writing in it nightly to help release your thoughts before bed. Just remember that you’ll only get out of journaling as much as you put in. You have to commit to journaling on a regular basis with a goal in mind for the habit to give you the feeling of empowerment.

Strive to Always Learn Something New

If you’re lacking motivation and wondering how to become empowered, consider learning something new. While it’s great to make career-related goals, many of us yearn for outside hobbies or skills to empower ourselves.  Is there one thing in your life you’ve always wanted to learn but have never had the time for? Maybe you want to learn how to play the piano or speak Spanish. Or you want to get crafty through knitting or woodworking.

Regardless of the specific hobby, there’s never been a better time to learn it than right now. Make it one of your SMART goals and dedicate a small fraction of time towards it every week. Soon you’ll find yourself feeling empowered with your newfound skill!

Say Goodbye to Negativity

While empowering yourself comes from within, a lot of outside energy can impact your journey. When you’re around others who are empowered and drive, you feel more motivated and confident in achieving your own goals. But when you’re surrounded by negative people, it can be all too easy to fall into this mindset with them. 2020 is the year that we say goodbye to negativity in our lives.

Maybe you have a negative friend or family member that always leaves you feeling drained or worthless. Or you find yourself always comparing yourself and thinking negatively about your life after scrolling through social media. If so, it’s okay to separate yourself from the negative aspects of your life. Instead, use that time and energy to recommit to the things and people that make you feel happy and confident.

Invest in Yourself

Another essential rule for feeling empowerment is to start investing in yourself. Your mind and knowledge are worth more than many other facets of your life, and it’s time you start investing in them. For starters, there are tons of different self-improvement books out there to guide you on your empowerment journey. Visit your local bookstore or library and find a subgenre that speaks to you. If you use a library, all this will cost you is a little bit of freedom put towards reading.

If you’re willing to invest more monetarily, consider hiring a life coach or going on a rediscovery retreat. Both of these methods teach you how to be a better you, all while concentrating on your current strengths and weaknesses. If you’re looking for an ongoing empowerment opportunity, look for a local empowerment support network. These networks bring community members together to seek empowerment together and build each other up.

Use Failure as a Learning Experience

The last and final rule for reaching self empowerment is to use your failures as a learning experience.

Many times in life, when people fail, they give up. You may have signed up for an extra task at work but not delivered the desired results. Instead of using this as an excuse not to volunteer for new career opportunities in the future, use this as a way to learn. Break down the failure and try to identify what went wrong.

Did you not have the necessary knowledge to complete the project? Did you not devote enough time to the opportunity and therefore the end-result was rushed? Did you avoid asking for help because you didn’t want to admit you didn’t know as much as you thought you did? Once you figure out what went wrong, you can try again using your newfound knowledge.

Self-empowerment isn’t a one and done thing. Instead, you’ll always be striving to seek a deeper level of empowerment. Get started today by implementing one of these new rules into your life. After a while, you’ll feel empowered enough to add in another rule to your routine. Watch out 2020 — this is the year of personal empowerment!  Looking for other ways to empower yourself?
