Last week, a major President Barack Obama supporter and co-founder of the Human Rights Campaign and the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund was arrested on charges of sodomy and sexual abuse of a minor.
Terrence Bean, 66, was arrested at his home in Oregon.
“The indictment charges Bean with two counts of third-degree sodomy, a felony, and one count of third-degree sex abuse, a misdemeanor, police said…The alleged incident involved a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old boy,” the Oregonian reported.
The Lane County Chief Deputy District Attorney Patricia Perlow would not release any information about the case or the indictment.
His lawyer, Kristen Winemiller, said that Bean is the “victim of an extortion ring” by several men.
“Terry Bean is a highly respected community leader who has devoted his like to bettering our community,” she said in a statement. “Over the course of several months in 2013-2014 Terry was the victim of an extortion ring led by several men known to law enforcement. This current arrest is connected to the ongoing investigation of that case in which Mr. Bean has fully cooperated. No allegations against Terry Bean should be taken at face value. We look forward to the opportunity to clear his name.”
Bean was arrested after a six-month investigation that started with allegations that he secretly recorded videos having sex with men in his bedroom. In June, he was accused by former lover Kiah Lawson, 25, of “attempting to extort him over the discovery of a hidden camera.” Bean tried to reach a $40,000 settlement.
Bean then reportedly went to the police and asked them to look into the allegations. He also gave them “evidence of additional illegal activity by Lawson and others.”
However, the investigation turned to Bean himself. He and Lawson were both arrested, Lawson with “third-degree sodomy and third-degree sexual abuse.”
Bean was released after posting a $5,000 bail. He has a pending court date in Lane County.
