Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee told Iowa-based talk show host Steve Deace that he thinks marriage equality is a “constitutional crisis,” and that governors should ignore the Supreme Court’s decision to “let stand lower court rulings legalizing marriage equality.”

“I look back to 1973,” Huckabee said, referring to the Roe v. Wade decision in which the Supreme Court made abortion legal, “and I’m wondering what would have happened if the two branches of government, the executive and the legislative, simply said, ‘We appreciate your opinion, court, but now if states wish to empower that, I guess they can do so, but until that happens we’re not automatically going to go killing 55 million babies over the next 40 years.’”

Huckabee said officials should stand up for their beliefs. Instead of listening to the courts, he thinks officials should have said, “Well, the courts have spoken and it’s an important voice, but it’s not the voice of God and the Supreme Court isn’t God,” and ignore the rulings.

Huckabee also told the American Family Association’s radio show that he will leave the Republican party if they don’t start fighting against gay marriage.

“I am utterly exasperated with Republicans and the so-called leadership of the Republicans who have abdicated on this issue when, if they continue this direction they guarantee they’re gonna lose every election in the future,” he said.

He thinks they should “grow a spine,” and that “if Republicans wanna lose guys like me, and a whole bunch of still God-fearing Bible-believing people, go ahead and just abdicate on this issue, and go ahead and say abortion doesn’t matter, either. Because at that point, you lose me, I’m gone. I’ll become an independent, I’ll start finding people that have guys to stand, I’m tired of this.”

Hopefully no one has let Huckabee know that Republican speaker John Boehner has already helped raise money for the openly gay Republican candidate Carl DeMaio.
