The 1998 film starring Bette Midler will be remade by Lifetime, and Menzel will take over the role as the aspiring singer CC who befriends Hillary, played by Barbara Hershey in the original. The rest of the cast has yet to be revealed.
Lifetime recently offered a remake of the beloved classic Steel Magnolias and it was a huge success. The original starred a fresh-faced Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, and Daryl Hannah. The remake featured Queen Latifah as both star and executive producer, alongside Jill Scott, Alfre Woodard, Condola Rashad, Adepero Oduye, and Phylicia Rashad.
Menzel, also the voice behind Elsa in Frozen, will sing some of the iconic songs from Beaches, including “Wind Beneath My Wings,” “The Glory of Love,” and a few new ones.
The movie was announced just days after the original producer, Marshall, died.
Production is set to begin August 15 in Vancouver and will premiere in 2017.
