It’s been 15 years since Josh Groban learned he had a bear fan base.
“I was at some kind of shop, and I was walking around with someone – it was probably my girlfriend,” Groban told PrideSource. “And this guy comes up to me and goes, ‘Hey, I just want you to know, the bears love you.’ I’m like, ‘Excuse me? What?’ And I didn’t know what that meant! I’m like, ‘Are you a baseball team?’”
Groban, who is currently dating Two Broke Girls’ Kat Dennings, said he would have no issue coming out as gay if he were actually gay.
“It’s such a thing when people speculate,” Groban said. “I would have nothing to hide if that were case. People have speculated, have wanted to speculate – whatever, fine. I’m not gay, but if I were, I don’t view it as a bad thing. If I were, I’d say, ‘OK, fine, speculate all you want and let’s talk about it.”
Groban said he is lucky to come from such an open-minded family background. He said he and his parents have always had good gay friends, and he doesn’t understand why people use sexuality as an insult.
“That’s the thing that bugs me more than anything though – that the mention of it would be considered provocative when, really, in this day and age it shouldn’t be,” he said.
Dennings recently appeared as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, a show Groban said he is now into.
“I mean, RuPaul’s incredible,” he said. “The influence she’s had on everybody is just amazing, and then you see the competition.”
Groban said that without fail, he has met someone from the LGBT community at his shows that has told him his music has been a huge part of them being able to freely express themselves.
“I always try to find songs and sing songs that try to express those beliefs and those values, so it’s always very gratifying when somebody shares those stories with me,” he said.
Groban’s album, Stages, is due out April 28.
