Joe Rehyansky, a Vietnam veteran and part-time judge in Tennessee, believes “Lesbians should be allowed to serve, gay men should not.” He said this on the conservative news website The Daily Caller, as well as making another more serious proposal. The news site has removed part of the article where Rehyansky said lesbians should be allowed into the U.S. military so that their male counterparts can “convert” them. So much for those in positions of power in the United States being ahead of those in other countries! It sounds like he’s suggesting corrective rape. He went on to say that his lesbian policy “ . . . would get the distaff part of our homosexual population off our collective ‘Broke Back,’ thus giving straight male GIs a fair shot at converting lesbians and bringing them into the mainstream.”
This conservative, who apparently believes in human evolution, made the argument that in the early years of human development, “It fell to men to swing through the trees and scour the caves in search of as many women as possible to subdue and impregnate — a tough job but someone had to do it.” His argument as to why gay men shouldn’t be allowed in the military? It’s not fair for the straight guys to be ogled by their desiring eyes in the common showers.
I honestly don’t really know what to say about this guy except, “Really? In this day and age there are still guys like you?” Frankly, as a woman and a lesbian, that scares me. I thought people like judges were around to protect us and enforce the laws, not encourage people to break the law and rape women. I guess I have to chalk this one up to just another ignorant bigot who thinks being gay is a choice.
