As a victim of bullying herself, Kate Winslet is now giving back by playing the voice of the lead character in a new animated short about bullying.
The five-minute video Daisy Chain features a young girl who is bullied. Her friends helps her create a “daisy chain” so strong that no one can break it.
Writer and director Galvin Scott Davis said the short was inspired by his nine-year-old son.
“My middle boy was acting quiet and I found out that he’d been bullied,” Davis told Guardian Australia. “It wasn’t a bad case of bullying but it was enough to make him lose his confidence. So I sat down and told him a bedtime story off the cuff. And I finished with the line ‘bullying is for people with no imagination.’”
His son went to the bully the next day and the two made a comic book together.
Winslet, who has been outspoken about her own issues with bullies in school, had met Davis years ago when he was young actor. He told her to “never give up,” so he decided to take that advice and reach out to her.
“I contacted her agent and I didn’t think for one minute she would do it,” he said. “But she came back and said she would – and she recorded it in two takes.”
Daisy Chain also has an illustrated book, an App and character figurines.
