Laverne Cox will be trading her prison garb for lawyer attire as the star in CBS’ new legal drama Doubt. If picked up for the CBS fall schedule, Doubt would be the first episodic to feature a regular trans character played by a trans actor on a prime-time show on that network.
Cox, 30, will play Cameron Wirth, a “transgender Ivy League-educated attorney” who gets involved with one of her clients accused of a brutal crime.
Grey’s Anatomy alums Tony Phelan and wife Joan Rater have written and produced the script alongside producers Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly.
Cox became the first openly transgender actress to receive an Emmy nomination for her role as Sophia Burset in Orange is the New Black, and since then has been guest-starring on shows like Faking It, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce and The Mindy Project.
Orange is the New Black will premiere its third season this summer and Cox will be back in her original groundbreaking role.
