A new survey by the Pew Research Center shows that 85 percent of self-identified Catholics between the ages 18 and 29 think gays and lesbians should be accepted by society.

Seventy-five percent of these Catholics also think same-sex marriage should be legalized.

While the older Catholic crowd, ages 65 and older, are less agreeable about homosexuality, over half (57 percent) believe homosexuality should be accepted.

One factor towards the acceptance of homosexuality, according to research, could be the time spent in church.

Older Catholics go to Mass more frequently than the younger Catholics, so they may be more discouraged into agreeing with homosexuality. However, of those that do attend Mass weekly, over half (60 percent) believe homosexuality should be accepted.

The Vatican seemed to be on the same page as those accepting homosexuality as a document, initiated by 200 bishops, was released saying, “Homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer the Christian community: are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a further space in our communities?” The document was later clarified.
