Millennials Hold the Key to Promoting LGBTQ Small Businesses

Diversity and inclusion are the biggest obstacles that LGBTQ consumers face within the conservative states in the US. The baby-boomers and conservative right-wing voters are still very much opposed to the LGBTQ movements, especially within businesses. Add religious beliefs to this sentiment and the state of inclusion hits a stubborn wall of resistance and acceptance. Luckily, millennials are generally liberal, accepting and encouraging when it comes to the rights and culture of the LGBTQ community, and now all that remains is that they constantly campaign and support businesses run by the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and trans-sexual community. If you are considering a start-up in the State of Washington, you would do well in business as state laws are fully inclusive and non-discriminatory.

The Millennial Culture

Children born between 1980 and 1996 are described as millennials – these children are all working adults now, and account for up to 35% of the US labor force. Millennial adults grew up in a rapid technology advancement period and adjusted to the technology revolution with ease and comfort. With the rise of tech and social media, the rise of inclusion and a sort of rebellion occurred too within the millennials. This is because millennials are more empathetic, more diverse, and eager to put their money where their mouths are. Millennials are more geared towards community and global issues and making a difference in these areas than having children and the proverbial white picket fence life. Earning money is no longer enough; millennials demand a society of transparency, equal rights and accountability within the business, political and global realms. This is great news for LGBTQ start-ups and organizations who lobby for change and acceptance.

LGBTQ Entrepreneurship

Washington State has evolved from the previous century and is more accepting of LGBTQ rights, marriage and businesses when compared to the more conservative states. State laws protect the LGBTQ community from discrimination and it is regularly referred to as the most LGBTQ-friendly state. This is great for millennial entrepreneurs who wish to obtain their Washington State business license for start-ups or small enterprises. Businesses in the State of Washington can thrive and succeed with less frustration and resistance, and the benefits of inclusion and supporting the economy will set a good example for other states to follow. This can only be good, for not only the US, but the world too. It may seem to be a slow process, but at least the process is up and running and gaining momentum each day.

The Way Forward

The way forward is for communities to stand fast within the midst of religious, political and ethical debates, and not only promote LGBTQ entrepreneurship, but support it too. Eventually, the shift will come when such issues are no longer obstacles and business can be conducted as normal. The policy makers in the baby-boom generation will soon be retiring, which will give way to a more inclusive way of life and business. It is unfortunate that the problem even exists as there should be no room for discrimination within the business world when everyone is trying to improve employment rates and boost the economy. The millennial generation is transforming economies around the world, and soon it will be the norm rather than the struggle. We all just have to hang in there and forge our way forward by supporting businesses in the LGBTQ community.
