SHOWTUNES Theatre Company stages a concert version of Meredith Willson’s beloved Miracle on 34th Street – The Musical at Benaroya Hall on December 14 (8 p.m.) and 15 (2 p.m.). Originally titled Here’s Love when it opened on Broadway in 1963, Meredith Willson (Music Man, Unsinkable Molly Brown) later changed the title of the show to Miracle on 34th Street –The Musical and added his 1951 holiday hit song, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” to the score. This classic tune, recorded by Perry Como, Bing Crosby and Michael Bublé, is one of many spirited songs in the score including: “Pinecones and Hollyberries,” “Here’s Love” and “That Man over There is Santa Claus.”
Miracle on 34th Street – The Musical is based on the 1947 20th Century Fox film with a story by Valentine Davies and screenplay by George Seaton. In it, Kris Kringle takes on the cynics and spreads a wave of love throughout New York City. In the process, this charming white-bearded gentleman manages to foster camaraderie between rival department stores Macy’s and Gimbels and convince a divorced cynical single mother, her somber daughter, and the entire state of New York that Santa Claus is not a myth.
With 14 years and 22 shows under their belts, SHOWTUNES produces concert versions of countless unsung American musical theatre gems.
