Modern Family actor Reid Ewing came out via Twitter by saying he was “never in.”
The 27-year-old actor who plays Dylan on the show, caught media’s attention when he wrote a blog for HuffPost Healthy Living about body dysmorphia. He then went on Twitter to discuss the topic that had been picked up by Good Morning America.
“At the beginning of 2012, all the isolation, secrecy, depression, and self-hate became too much to bear. I vowed I would never get cosmetic surgery again even though I was still deeply insecure about my looks. It took me about six months before I was comfortable with people even looking at me,” he wrote in the blog post.
He added, “Plastic surgery is not always a bad thing. It often helps people who actually need it for serious cases, but it’s a horrible hobby, and it will eat away at you until you have lost all self-esteem and joy. I wish I could go back and undo all the surgeries. Now I can see that I was fine to begin with and didn’t need the surgeries after all.”
“Saw Eugene Bata on @GMA in the Body Dysmorphia segment connected to my article and I just want to say he is hot af,” the star tweeted.
A fan responded and asked if he just outed himself, to which Ewing replied, “I was never in.”
His nonchalant response caused a big media stir and seemed to be taking away from his original article, Ewing thought.
“Writes a cosmetic surgery article, people care more that I’m gay…” he tweeted with a GIF of Bea Arthur.
He may have gotten more followers after the news of being gay, but Ewing is now using his new following to reiterate his story on body dysmorphia to make sure people know that “before seeking to change your face, you should question whether it is your mind that needs fixing.”
