GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today praised Captain Jennifer Peace, Staff Sgt. Logan Ireland, Lt. Cmdr. Blake Dremann, and other transgender service members for accepting the invitation by Members of Congress to attend tonight’s State of the Union Address. Their attendance comes as President Donald Trump and his administration are actively trying to ban them from openly serving in the country’s armed forces.

As of this release, the following transgender service members have accepted the following State of the Union invitations:

  • Captain Jennifer Peace, guest of Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)
  • Lt. Commander Blake Dremann, guest of U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
  • Staff Sgt Logan Ireland, guest of U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA)
  • Navy Petty Officer Second Class Megan Winters, guest of U.S. Rep. Donald McEachin (D-VA)
  • Veteran Tavion Dignard, guest of U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas (D-NH)

These transgender service members and veterans are available for interviews. To schedule an interview, please use the contact information above. Capt. Peace and Sgt. Ireland appear in the documentary TransMilitary, which last month earned a Special Recognition honor at the GLAAD Media Awards. “My respect and admiration for these service members is immense as they stand up not just for themselves, but for all brave, qualified patriots who wish to serve this nation free of discrimination,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO at GLAAD. “It’s time for President Trump to abandon this misguided attempt at a ban that would compromise military readiness and put the careers of transgender service members in jeopardy and prevent others from joining.”

GLAAD has fought back against the Trump Administration’s transgender military ban since the President issued his directive on July 26, 2017. Not only has GLAAD condemned the administration’s attempt to prevent transgender Americans from serving the United States, but GLAAD also supported the production and publicity of TransMilitary, a documentary which tells the stories about the brave trans soldiers currently our country. TransMilitary is now available on iTunes and Amazon.

Since his inauguration in 2017, President Trump and his administration have unleashed more than 92 attacks against LGBTQ Americans in policy and rhetoric. GLAAD’s Trump Accountability Project (TAP) has catalogued every anti-LGBTQ action by this administration, available at glaad.org/trump.
