“Yes b——s I am engaged. Despite their concerns about the patriarchal confines of marriage, actor/singer Lea DeLaria & editrix Chelsea Fairless of Brooklyn, New York are pleased to announce their engagement,” she wrote. “No date has been set for the impending nuptials but it’s safe to say that it will be the event of the season, or a total s—- show.”
The caption was under a Photoshopped picture from Liza Minnelli’s wedding in March 2002 with producer David Guest. DeLaria and Fairless were Photoshopped in place of the now exes, and posing next to their wedding guests Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor.
“It’s such a classy campy picture,” DeLaria said of the photo. “We were chomping at the bit when can we post this!? It’s very indicative of who we are and what our wedding would look like.”
The couple met through DeLaria’s Orange is the New Black co-star Emma Myles, who plays the laundry room’s Leanne on the show. Myles and Fairless went to high school together.
“Orange has changed my life in so many ways,” DeLaria said. “I was as confirmed a bachelor as much as George Clooney, let me tell you!”
DeLaria asked Fairless to marry her during the SAG Awards. They had been talking about it for a bit, and after talking to Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson, DeLaria decided to pop the question.
“I proposed literally at the SAG Awards and she said yes,” DeLaria said. “And we announced at the Netflix after-party.”
DeLaria didn’t have ring for her fiancé, but that wasn’t a problem.
“I know better than to buy jewelry for Chelsea,” she said. “She works in fashion and I said, ‘This is how much you can spend, go get yourself a ring!’”
Longtime friend Sandra Bernhard will officiate that wedding that is aiming to be in New York during the summer of 2016, and Ferguson will be DeLaria’s best man.
