The first LGBT Pride Night for the Oakland Athletics will be held in June. Pitcher Sean Doolittle’s girlfriend Eireann Dolan has been praised for working hard to make sure it goes well.
Some season ticket holders reacted negatively by the announcement of the LBGT night, set for the game against the San Diego Padres, and Dolan offered to purchase all unwanted tickets and give them to a charity so those wanting to go to the game could.
“If you’d like to sell your tickets to June 17th’s LGBT Pride Night game, I will buy them from you at face value. As many as I can,” she wrote on her blog. “From there, I will donate any tickets I purchase to the Bay Area Youth Center’s Our Space community for LGBTQ youth.”
She has also started an online fundraising campaign to buy more seats for the group. Doolittle agreed to match his girlfriend’s donations up to $3,000. So far, they have raised over $25,000.
On her blog, Dolan opened up about why this night is so important to her.
“Many people don’t know this about me, but I have two moms,” she wrote. “My biological mom Kathy and her partner Elise (who grew up in the Bay Area) are both die-hard A’s fans as well as super gay. Like, they’re so gay for each other that they’ve fostered a long-term loving relationship likely no different from any heterosexual loving relationships you’ve seen or been a part of.”
Though Dolan said she was “disheartened” by the negative responses, she also said “everybody is entitled to their own beliefs and as long as nobody is getting hurt, I’m happy. I also can’t stop you from selling your tickets. I won’t tell you that you are wrong or that you are not allowed to think or act that way.”
She signed her blog post “Love, Eireann and my hella gay moms.”
The Oakland A’s released a statement in response to Dolan and Doolittle, saying: “We are hopeful that the support that has been expressed for the event in the past few days will make it an even more successful first-year event and demonstrate that the A’s organization welcomes and supports the inclusion of all fans.”
