Nelson, Co-founder and Co-owner of Fremont Brewing, is a successful, highly regarded neighborhood small business owner and environmental leader who has deep experience in City government

Sara Nelson, an environmental champion and owner of Fremont Brewing, a neighborhood small business, is running for Seattle City Council Position 8. Seattle City Council Position 8 is an at-large district covering all of Seattle. Incumbent Tim Burgess is not seeking reelection.

A longtime resident of Green Lake with a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Washington, Sara has been an active member of our community for nearly 30 years. Sara is a pragmatic and experienced progressive leader with strong environmental and social justice credentials. As a former City Council staff person, she has a nuanced understanding of how city government works and a firm grasp of how best to develop and implement complex city policy. As a co-founder of Fremont Brewing, a popular neighborhood small business, Nelson helped grow the company from three full-time employees in 2009 to over 60 today and will bring that direct experience creating middle class, manufacturing jobs to City Council.

“I am excited to announce my candidacy for City Council Position 8,” said Nelson. “I’ll bring the unique perspective of a small business owner who puts her progressive values to work every day – on behalf of our employees, our environment, and our community. As a mother of two school-aged children, I care deeply about this city and I want to ensure that our resources are spent wisely to protect our public assets like parks, community centers and roads. My years of City Council experience will give me a head start fighting for a fairer and greener Seattle.”

Nelson already has support from a diverse array of civic leaders, including former Mayor Greg Nickels, former City Councilmember Richard Conlin, respected environmental leaders, and small business owners.

“I’ve worked for the City Council and I’ve worked with the City Council. The Council works best when there is balance. Sara, with her years of experience as a neighborhood small business owner and her level-headed approach will make the Council’s voice stronger for the all people in our community,” said former Mayor Greg Nickels.

Other progressive small business owners and environmental leaders praised Sara’s strong environmental credentials.

“I’m backing Sara for City Council because she understands the struggles of small business and as sustainability lead at Fremont Brewing, she has a long history of supporting the local food movement and organic restaurants,” said Maria Hines, Owner of Tilth Restaurant in Wallingford.

“Fremont Brewing is a leader in sustainability and their Cowiche Canyon Fresh Hop Ale was the first beer in Washington to get Salmon Safe certification. That’s why I’m supporting Sara Nelson for City Council,” said David Burger, the Executive Director of Stewardship Partners.
