Washington United for Marriage, a broad statewide coalition of organizations, congregations, unions, businesses and business associations working to defend civil marriage for lesbian and gay couples in Washington State, today chastised Protect Marriage Washington for continuing to align itself with the discredited National Organization for Marriage (NOM).
On Tuesday, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) released copies of NOM’s confidential strategy documents which showed NOM fighting a losing battle with tactics that are racially and ethnically divisive, filled with false political calculations, and out of touch with the majority of fair-minded Americans. The revelation was made after a court-ordered release of information relating to NOM’s involvement in the 2009 Maine marriage campaign.
“When any organization attempts to pit neighbor against neighbor to win a political debate, it’s despicable,” said Zach Silk, Campaign Manager for Washington United for Marriage. “But when the foundation of that strategy is rooted in bigotry and racism, it’s utterly deplorable. We call upon Protect Marriage Washington to denounce NOM’s tactics, and tell them their conniving plan to divide and conquer minority communities has no place in Washington State.”
As NOM continues to lose ground in the fight for marriage equality, their obvious desperation has grown larger. The documents outlined NOM’s strategy to “drive a wedge between gays and blacks” while “making support for marriage a key badge of Latino identity” and “to make opposition to gay marriage an identity marker, a badge of youth rebellion to conformist assimilation to the bad side of ‘Anglo’ culture.” It’s clear that NOM and its allies do not care to foster lasting relationships with minority communities, and merely see them as political pawns in their game.
