Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, Alfre Woodard Star in ‘Steel Magnolias’ Remake

The 1989 Herbert Ross drama Steel Magnolias (originally inspired by Robert Harling’s 1987 off-Broadway play by the same name) starred a tender Julia Roberts alongside legendary talents Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, Sally Field, and Tom Skerritt.

Now, 23 years later, the Piggly Wiggly has some new shoppers – Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad and Alfre Woodard  among them.

In the remake due out this fall, Queen Latifah plays Sally Field’s original part of M’Lynn, Alfre Woodard takes over MacLaine’s Ouiser, Phylicia Rashad is Clairee, Adepero Oduye is meek Annelle, and Rashad’s real-life daughter, Condola Rashad, plays Shelby.

“It’s a classic story with classic characters,” Woodard told the New York Post this week. “It’s not like we’re turning it into Big Momma’s House!

Lifetime has released the following two minute trailer to entice a new generation to a little southern hospitality.
