The local sports scene is about to heat up as the Rat City Rollergirls (RCRG) prepare for their ninth season, beginning in January.
RCRG is Seattle’s first all-female, flat-track roller derby league. RCRG is composed of about 80 active skaters and many more retired skaters who are actively involved in the organization. The skaters are divided among four home teams: Derby Liberation Front, Grave Danger, Sockit Wenches, and Throttle Rockets. In addition, a small number of skilled, dedicated skaters are chosen to represent the league on an expanded elite A/B team, called the Rat City Rollergirls All Stars.
With lightning-fast jammers and a swarm of precision blockers, the women of Rat City have taken the national derby scene by storm, placing in the top 5 in WFTDA-sanctioned tournaments. For the past eight seasons, RCRG consistently maintains a ranking among the nation’s top 10 best derby teams. RCRG has consistently graduated to larger and larger venues, finally finding a home at KeyArena in 2009, home of the Seattle Storm WNBA team and former home to the Seattle Sonics NBA team.
Rat City has cultivated a loyal fan base over the years, and the league continues to grab the interest of people seeking a unique and highly entertaining experience. This season promises all the hard hits and amazing athletic feats of seasons past, but will offer an additional element as visiting teams are thrown into the mix.
Each month, fans have the opportunity to see two out of four of their favorite home teams battle it out on the track, but now they will also get to cheer on a Rat City home team against a visiting league. These talented women have been training hard in anticipation for what will prove to be a competitive and exciting season.
Rat City puts the same amount of dedication into furthering its local derby community, whether hosting training camps, coaching junior derby, informally scrimmaging with teams from nearby leagues, or hosting tournaments like the Bumberbout at Bumbershoot (2006), the Rust Riot (2008), and Northwest Knockdown, the 2008 WFTDA National Championship in Portland, Oregon.
