Republican Senator Portman Sides with Same-Sex Marriage

220px-Rob_Portman,_official_portrait,_112th_CongressOhio Senator Rob Portman announced his support for the freedom to marry today, saying his journey began when his son came out as gay two years ago. In an op-ed in the Columbus Dispatch, Portman, a Republican who supported the so-called Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, wrote, “I believe all of our sons and daughters ought to have the same opportunity to experience the joy and stability of marriage.”

Marc Solomon, Freedom to Marry’s national campaign director, released the following statement:

“We greatly appreciate Senator Portman’s sharing his journey on the freedom to marry with his constituents and with the American people. It’s a beautifully human experience for a father to listen with an open heart to his son, to reflect on his own beliefs, and conclude that he wants for his son the same opportunity for happiness that comes with being able to marry that he and his wife have had. We hope that Senator Portman’s journey is an example that other Americans will look to as they reflect on their own position on the freedom to marry.”

  1. This is usually the case…Republicans are 100% against same-sex marriage until one of their family members comes out that he or she is gay…then suddenly same-sex marriage is cool.

    • It actually takes two more years after a family member comes out…they have to wait until they are no longer on the short list for VP on the Republican ticket.

And 8 months after that happens too.
