And the secrets continue to spill on CBS’ The Talk during secret week.
The day after Big Brother host Julie Chen revealed she had plastic surgery to enlarge her eyes due to workplace racism, co-host Sara Gilbert admitted she realized she was gay while dating Roseanne co-star Johnny Galecki.
At the time, Gilbert said that she had a huge crush on Galecki.
“And we started dating and he would come over and we would, like, make out, and then I would start to get depressed,” Gilbert said.
Gilbert decided to be honest once she decided she was questioning her sexuality and told Galecki. He was “super sweet about it,” Gilbert said.
After the breakup, Gilbert started dating a woman 18 years older than she was who was also in the public eye.
“It was something people could have found out about. Like no one knew at the show for years, and Johnny held the secret the whole time. And I always felt so scared,” Gilbert said. “If it came out, what could happen? Could I lose my career? Will I ever be able to play a straight role again?”
Galecki never told anyone about the real reason she and Gilbert broke up in the 90s. They are still pals, and Gilbert occasionally appears on The Big Bang Theory with Galecki.
Before confessing this secret on The View Gilbert said she spoke with Galecki and asked if he’d be ok with her saying such details on national television.
“The story sort of starts with you. And I’ve got to say I made out with you and got depressed, which is kind of a bummer,” Gilbert said. “[He said], ‘Of course. I love you, and I think it’s really important. And I’m so proud of you … If you want, I will be there, and I will hold your hand.’ It was so sweet, and this story really makes Johnny look good.”
Gilbert thinks it’s important for people to realize they can struggle with their sexuality.
“It’s a process, and there can be a part of you that doesn’t want to feel different or feel scared,” she said.
Gilbert is now engaged to rocker girlfriend Linda Perry.
