The Storm needed overtime to do it, but was able to withstand a late Washington Mystics run to win 96-86 Tuesday night at KeyArena. Tina Thompson led the way for the Storm with a season-high 30 points and eight rebounds.
In a game where Thompson could not be denied, the 6-2 forward hit big shot after big shot to lead her team to victory, including a three pointer to beat the shot clock in overtime to give Seattle an 85-80 lead with just minutes left. She finished the game 5-9 from distance, to the delight of Storm fans who filled the arena with chants of her name.
Four of the five Storm starters scored in double figures. Tanisha Wright scored 17 points and dished out a team-high six assists. Temeka Johnson added 16 points and Camille Little scored 15, tying her season-high total.
Washington was led by Crystal Langhorne, who scored 23 points and seven rebounds. Matee Ajavon added 17 points off the bench and Monique Currie and Michelle Snow both chipped in with 12.
Sue Bird returned with the team from its Connecticut road trip and made her first appearance of the season at KeyArena.
The Storm hits the road Friday, June 21, to take on San Antonio at 5 p.m., followed by a game Saturday at Tulsa, with a tipoff time of 5 p.m. The Storm returns home on Friday, June 28, to take on the New York Liberty at 7 p.m.
