Due to the recent increase in violent crime on Capitol Hill, Social Outreach Seattle (SOSea) and Velocity Dance Center have teamed up to help make the neighborhood safe again by educating people on personal safety.
SOSea has organized the first annual street-smart and self-defense class, Kick Ass Queens & Femmes. The class will be taught by world champion martial artist Mac McGregor and hosted by local drag queen Robbie Turner.
McGregor, who is the SOSea Transgender & Gender Non-Conforming Outreach Director and one of the highest-ranking martial artists in the world, will be the instructor. He has traveled the world competing, teaching and coaching. McGregor is a world champion martial artist and former U.S. Karate team member. He has coached 58 national champions and 29 Junior Olympic champions. He is also a certified defensive tactics instructor for law enforcement professionals. McGregor teaches self-defense, martial arts, tai-chi wellness and energy seminars at conferences, businesses and groups around the world. He has been inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame and holds a Guinness World Record.
SOSea Executive Director Shaun Knittel said: “The motto that we have adopted, and the words that these criminals attacking, assaulting, and mugging [our community] need to hear is, ‘Our neighborhood belongs to us, not crime.’”
Kick Ass Queens & Femmes will take place on Sunday, February 17, 2013 from 6-9:00 p.m. The cost is free, but donations to SOSea is greatly appreciated and will be accepted at the event. Velocity Dance Center (1621 12th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122) has graciously offered their space for this community outreach program.
