SCBlueHeatThe Sounders Women (15pts, 5-1-0) bounced back from a 0-1 Santa Clarita (9pts, 3-4-0) lead at halftime, securing the fourth consecutive Sounders victory, 2-1. The win moves the Sounders into third place in the W-League Western Conference, just one point shy of Bay Area Breeze, who have played two additional matches.

Santa Clarita developed a lead in the match, keeping Sounders on their toes at halftime. During the second half, the Sounders pressured hard, took 18 shots, compared to Blue Heat’s, 13, and put two goals in the net within a 30-minute span.

The first chance of the afternoon for the Sounders to get on the scoreboard arose in the 6th minute when defender Rachel Pitman dribbled down the right side of the field, and crossed it to the center of the 18 yard-box directly to Lyndsey Patterson’s foot. Patterson bent the ball on target, but hit the top right side of the crossbar, for no goal.

In the 28th minute, Santa Clarita scored the first goal of the match. Forward Celina Minissian drilled a shot from 30 yards out, only to have it bounce off the crossbar. Forward Kasandra Massey was in the penalty box waiting for the rebound, and tapped it in near post for a 0-1 Blue Heat lead.

Another Sounders opportunity developed in the 41st minute when Patterson received the ball from midfield, dribbled into Santa Clarita territory and went one-on-one with goalkeeper, Kaci McCain. Patterson fired the ball toward goal, but was inches shy of tying up the game.

The halftime score ended in a 0-1 Santa Clarita lead.

The Sounders, unable to respond to the Blue Heat lead in the first half of the match, retaliated in the 57th minute. Pitman, yet again, made a fantastic cross to forward Kennya Cordner who was inside of the 18-yard box, but was unable to get a foot on it. Forward Elise Wyatt managed to find the ball instead, send it home, and finish the play. Wyatt drilled the ball to the top left corner of the net— just outside of Santa Clarita’s reach— for a 1-1 match.

In the 78th minute, Cordner dribbled down the sideline, beat Blue Heat defenders and sent a fierce ball across the face of Santa Clarita’s goal, curving it home perfectly for a 2-1 Sounders lead.

The Sounders Women will compete in their next match at 7 p.m. on June 27 against Colorado Rush at Starfire Stadium. For tickets and details, see SoundersWomen.com.
