The Sounders Women defeated Seattle University with an 89th minute goal scored by Sarah Campbell. With three Seattle University graduates starting in midfield for the Sounders, the match had a celebratory atmosphere.

After Seattle University graduate, Melissa Busque, scored in the 31st minute, her goal was answered by her former teammates late in the match. The exclamation point for the match followed after a mistake was pounced on by Campbell.

The Sounders controlled most of the possession and chances in the first half. Busque, the former Redhawk-turned-Sounder, picked the ball up outside the top of the penalty box, took a few feigned touches and shot with her left foot into the bottom left corner.

The Sounders looked like the more likely team to score in the second half, with good chances falling to Megan Lindsay and other Sounders attackers, but freshman Seattle U goalkeeper, Briana Smallidge, made multiple saves to keep the deficit at one.

In the 63rd minute, the Sounders’ 15-year-old attacker, Maddie Shultz, crossed to the middle for Campbell. Her first time shot was saved and Lindsay picked up the rebound. After a touch to settle, Lindsay drove a shot to the near post, careening off the upright, and out of play.

As the match wore on, chances continued for the Sounders, but Seattle University also began to create. In the 83rd minute, successive chances for Seattle U were saved first by Sounders goalkeeper Erin McNulty and then defender Brigit Reder.

Just when it looked like a subdued finish would cap off the night, the Redhawks spiced things up with a game-tying goal from Julia Moravec. The freshman turned neatly at the top of the box and shot to the far corner, beating McNulty.

Shortly after, with the Sounders putting on pressure, Seattle U was caught with a defensive mistake. A missed touch gave Campbell the opportunity to pick off possession at the edge of the area. She drove in on goal and tucked in a simple finish to the bottom corner to give the Sounders the match-winner.
