Republican candidate Susanne Atanus of Niles, Illinois not only believes that God dictates weather patterns, but that he is punishing humans with tornadoes, autism and dementia because of abortion access and marriage equality.
“I am not in favor of abortions, I am not in favor of gay rights,” she said in January.
Atanus won the GOP nomination to challenge Rep. Jan Schakowsky in the Chicago-area 9th Congressional District.
“God is angry,” she said. “We are provoking him with abortions and same-sex marriage and civil unions. Same-sex activity is going to increase AIDS. If it’s in our military, it will weaken our military. We need to respect God.”
Atanus told the Chicago’s LGBT publication, the Windy City Times, that God controls the weather and that’s how you can tell he is mad.
“Everybody knows that God controls weather,” she said. “God is super angry. Gay marriage is not appropriate, and it doesn’t look right, and it breeds AIDS.”
Atanus won 54 precent of the vote against Republican candidate David Earl Williams III, but Chicago didn’t have an easy time voting. During a hearing in January, a judge issued a domestic violence civil protection order against the candidate for stalking his former girlfriend.
