Former Private Practice star Taye Diggs will begin the starring role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway July 22, 2015.

Diggs joked to TMZ that he is more than prepared to take on the role.

“There’s a lot of glitter,” Diggs said. “I mean, I went through a stage where I was a drag queen in high school in tenth and eleventh grade, and I experimented with homosexuality, anal play. And outside of that I worked the streets, male prostitution. I have a flaming homosexual inside of me, so I’m raring to let that out.”

Diggs will be returning to Broadway for the first time after being an original cast member of Rent in 1996.

“Taye is fantastic – he has theater cred, he has pop culture cred, he can sing, he can act, he can dance, he’s smart and he’s sexy,” David Bender, the show’s lead producer said. “That’s why we cast him.”

Diggs is currently in production of the second season of Murder in the First, premiering June 8 on TNT. He will be the first African-American to play Hedwig in New York.

Neil Patrick Harris began the role of Hedwig over a year ago, and currently Glee’s Darren Criss has taken over. Previously, Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall and John Cameron Mitchell played the role.
