There is Help for the Homophobic

Charlene Strong, Co-Editor

The Seattle Lesbian would like to take the time to write a personal response to Mr. Fuckyoudikes who took offense to a recent story published in our online magazine titled Cleveland’s WMMS Radio Issues Apology Following Rover’s Morning Glory Lesbian Rape Comment:

Fukyoudikes April 30, 2012 – 2:47 pm Are you fucking kidding me? You complain about a best of segment that has ran multiple times before. So on behalf of all the fans I would like to say fuck you, you god damn dike bitches, and I hope you all get fucking raped in the ass and get beat to within an inch of your life!

Dear Mr. Fuckyoudikes,

Your spelling and grammar are atrocious and points to the ignorance of your vulgar and juvenile homophobic comments. It’s fascinating that those who desperately want to articulate how angry they are appear to rarely have the mental capacity to write a cohesive sentence that makes any sense!

How does one come to this conclusion, Mr. Fuckyoudikes?  I would like to give you some concrete solutions for your hatred, so I did some research for you. According to a website called All About Counseling, I thought this little excerpt might help you understand your condition. Yes, I said “condition”. Unlike homosexuality, homophobia is considered a mental health issue.

Homophobia
Though homosexuality was seen as mental disorder until the late 1970s, the majority of people have grown to understand the plight of LGBT people. Unfortunately, though, there is still some fear of them in our communities. This fear of a person’s own sexual preference and lifestyle is nearly always irrational and usually due to an inexperience around these different groups of people. Homophobia is an exaggerated, irrational or extreme fear of gay men or lesbian women, and will usually lead them to fear and sometimes hate these groups and subsequently avoid most people they envision as homosexual.

What Causes Homophobia
In contrast to most phobias, it is widely believed that homophobia is primarily caused by a person’s direct environment rather than an inherent view held within them or any series of traumatic events.

Here are the most common demographics that have reported the highest levels of homophobia:

  • Older men
  • Low levels of education
  • Religious
  • Supportive of traditional gender roles
  • Politically conservative
  • Residing in a geographic area where tolerance of same-sex marriages are incredibly low

Homophobia cannot only hold you back in your life, it can also hold back others around you. This condition is not only an extreme or irrational fear of gay or lesbian people, it is also usually coupled with a hatred or outspoken disapproval of their homosexual relationships. This has recently become a large issue in our society and especially in LGBT communities. Making the effort for change will make a huge difference in your personal life, usually resulting in a more calm and collected composure in previously perceived stressful situations. If you are ready to make this change, which will result in positive changes on both a personal and social level, do some early Internet research to find the best treatment options available near you.

Mr. Fuckyoudikes, you are not alone in your delusional pursuit. The Anti-Defamation League website states:

Many conservative religious leaders have, at some point, spoken out against the gay community and warned of the danger they supposedly pose to America. 700 Club television host Pat Robertson said that, “Many of those people involved in Adolf Hitler were Satanists, many of them were homosexuals – the two things seem to go together.” Former Congressman William Dannemeyer also compared homosexuals to Nazis when he wrote that “the homosexual blitzkrieg has been better planned than Hitler’s…” Clearly, it is ridiculous to compare homosexuals in America to Germany’s Nazi government which believed in warfare and mass murder as a means for taking over the world.

I do hope this shines some light on your condition and hopefully you will find your way to a mental health establishment that might help you find some relief for your outbursts of hatred and ignorance.

Peace,
Charlene

Information and love/peace/compassion are the best antidotes for hate/fear/misinformation. Thanks for being an advocate for the former and intolerant of the latter.

    Letter to the Editor

    Mr. Bill Mason,
1.3 women age 18 and over in the US are forcibly raped each minute; 78 per hour; 1871 per day, and 683,000 per year. In addition, 61% of rape victims are under the age of 18. 29% of all forcible rapes occurred when victims were 11 years or younger and 32% of the same 100% were between the ages of 11 and 17, and 90% of victims under 13 knew their attacker. Having these statistics readily available, as I do, it is hard for me to understand, if you are not a proponent of child sexual abuse, why have you failed to address the issue of your own Dominic Dieter, from Cleveland rock station WMMS Ohio, calling for fathers to ask their friends to sexually assault their daughters? On April 27th, Dieter addressed a question from a listener who had observed his daughter kissing another girl. When asked how to handle it, Dieter told this father he ‘should have one of his friends screw his daughter straight.”
I apologize if I assume you support all sexual abuse; is your position that only girls who show any sort of (normal) sexual curiosity towards another be sexually assaulted? 30.6% of lesbians compared with 17.8% of heterosexual women report being forcibly raped. Mr. Dieter seems to share the belief of those in Africa that homosexuality can be “cured’ by forcibly raping a women. This type of behavior is shown in men who are homophobic, sexist, racist and insecure. Dieter may have insured the rape and degradation of lesbian girls and women, which is punishable as a hate crime. At the very least he is guilty of infraction 2917.01 inciting to violence. Do you overlook this crime because you feel those who identify as LGBTQ are “suitable victims”? You see Mr. Mason, when the uninformed, uneducated bigots’ from your state infringe on the courageous crusaders of my state, I have to say NO MORE! After The Seattle Lesbian Magazine printed an article regarding this incident, the editors received a death threat from one of Dieter’s most eloquent and vocal supporters, a man who commented under the alias “Mr. Fuckyoudikes”, wrote “Are you fucking kidding me? You complain about a best of segment that has ran multiple times before. So on behalf of all the fans I would like to say fuck you, you god damn dike bitches, and I hope you all get fucking raped in the ass and get beat to within an inch of your life!”
I contacted Charlene Strong, the co-editor of SLM who posted a follow up article titled “There is Help for the Homophobic”, I asked how she does it, she simply said “I never really listen to what others say, I do have a bit of a platform now to point out ignorance and I feel strongly that we don’t speak of what we as the LGBTQ community are missing to see real equality.  It starts with being willing to vote, and being aware that it’s our responsibility to educate others who are misinformed.  A perfect example is the word choice and lifestyle.  I made a choice to be the person God made me to be, I don’t live a “gay” lifestyle, these comments are coined and subversive and I hear members of our own community using lifestyle all the time.  Our willingness to speak of our lives it key, but for no other reason then to be an advocate for understanding and acceptance.  My work all started from a deep love of another, nothing more.  I lived a nightmare and to be told I was no one was more then I should have had to endured, but I knew I must not be the only one who had suffered as well.  Love and passion are what continues to inspire me and I really don’t get caught up in what others think, I keep my head down and continue a dialogue that I hope motivates understanding.”
Mr. Mason, I write today to demand action! The perpetuation of hateful ideology like “curative rape” must be stopped! You have the opportunity to make a difference; your office should support the rights of LGBTQ community! Charlene Strong’s statement calling for equality and non-preferential treatment is not only representative of the LGBTQ community, but of all races, cultures and genders. If we allow this hatred to infiltrate our culture and behaviors, society will be filled with “Mr. Fuckyoudykes”! No longer will we be silent!
I have one question for you, are you an elected official?
