Emmy Award-winning actress Jane Lynch will host Uprising of Love: A Benefit Concert for Global Equality at the Gershwin Theatre in New York on Monday, September 15. The headliners for the show are Sting and Tony and Grammy Award winner, Patti LuPone.
Many other notable names and celebrities will be attending the event at the famed Broadway theatre including Tony Award winner Billy Porter, Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox, country singer Chely Wright, and others.
In partnership with the United Nations, Uprising of Love: A Benefit Concert for Global Equality supports the efforts of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN’s Free & Equal campaign in calling for equal rights globally for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex individuals, and to raise significant funding for grassroots organizations and activists working toward that goal around the world.
The event should be an entertaining one with executive producers Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin) and Bruce Cohen (American Beauty, Milk, Silver Linings Playbook) at the helm. Uprising of Love cofounder and script writer is Academy Award Winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk). The focus of the show goes well beyond the issues the LGBT community faces within the borders of the United States and it takes a more global perspective in what Black describes as “a deep and beautiful look at what’s going on worldwide.”
The net proceeds of the event will go directly to Fueling the Frontlines, a three-year, $20 million campaign for global LGBTI rights led by the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice. Astraea is the only philanthropic organization in the United States solely dedicated to advancing LGBTI rights globally.
